事務的な手続きや大学内を久しぶりに散策するために午前中は大学に，午後は自宅からオンラインでオリエンテーションを受けました。
事務的なこととして，OISS（Office for International Students and Scholars）に訪問して留学生としての登録と，Graduate Admissionで公式成績書類の提出をしました。留学生としての登録には，指導教員となる先生からの署名と初めの学期に履修すべき授業のリストをもらいました。また，おすすめのSIMカードなどの話も聞きました。はじめの学期は9単位分の授業を履修してスタートします。
大学の授業料の支払いについても話を聞きに行きました。目安の支払期限が明日までで，今回は大学からの日本語指導の給料の振り込みが9月に入ってからなので分割で振り込みができるように申請します。
午後には自宅に帰ってオンラインで大学院生向けの新入生オリエンテーションに参加しました。せっかく大学に行ったので対面で参加したかったのですが，参加者が300人近く，大学の様々な部署の方の話を聞くとなるとオンラインのほうが都合がよかったのかもしれません。私自身も時差ぼけのある状態だったので，気を張らずに参加できるという良さもありました。
オリエンテーションでは主に30分間隔で，大学院についてや保健センター，カウンセリング，大学生の自治団体，現在の学生からの体験談を紹介してもらい，最後に留学生向けのガイダンスが再度ありました。非常に情報量が多い内容で，適宜適切な部署に確認しながら対応していこうと感じました。そこでの情報で今回入学した博士課程の大学院生は106名ということを知りました。多様な学部やコースがある中なので，教育学部の情報コースに在籍する新入生は自分だけかもしれません。オリエンテーションが16時に終了し，少し休みました。
日本時間の21時からは昨年助成をいただいたJ-CLILの教員助成の成果報告会があります。それに向けての準備もしていきます。
Today was all about getting some important tasks done and exploring the campus again after a while. In the morning, I headed to the university to take care of administrative stuff, and in the afternoon, I joined the orientation for graduate students online from home.
First up, I visited the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) to complete my registration as an international student. I also dropped by Graduate Admissions to submit my official transcripts. For the international student registration, I got a signature from my advisor and a list of the courses I should take in my first semester. They even gave me some tips on the best SIM cards to use here. I’ll be starting off the semester with 9 credits worth of classes.
I also inquired about paying my tuition. The payment deadline is tomorrow, but since my stipend for teaching Japanese won’t be deposited until September, I’ll apply for an installment plan.
In the afternoon, I returned home to join the new graduate student orientation online. I would’ve liked to attend in person since I was already on campus, but with nearly 300 participants and various departments presenting, it actually worked out better online. Plus, with my lingering jet lag, it was nice to be able to participate from the comfort of home.
The orientation was packed with information. Every 30 minutes, we had sessions covering different aspects of graduate life, including the Health Center, Counseling Services, student governance, and even testimonials from current students. We wrapped up with another session specifically for international students. It was a lot to take in, but I’m glad I’ll have access to these resources when I need them. I also learned that there are 106 new PhD students this year. With such a wide range of departments and programs, I might be the only new student in the Educational Technology program!
The orientation ended around 4 PM, and I took a short break.
Later tonight, at 9 PM Japan time, I’ll be preparing for a report on the J-CLIL teacher grant I received last year. Time to get ready for that!
