１０時３０分から指導教員の先生と面談をしました。直接会うことができるのは初めてだったので，非常に良い時間になりました。UNRの大学院に来た理由や，頑張りたいこと，研究に関する心配事まで話をさせていただくことができました。特に留学生は3つの授業を履修する必要があり，そのうちの1つまでしかオンライン授業が認められないのに対し，私の所属するコースの多くの授業はオンラインであることは学校全体で調整が必要であることを教えてもらいました。OISSとも確認を取りながら進めていきます。
GAという，大学院生としての雇用が確保できていない状況なので，UNRの最初の学期では日本語の授業も担当させていただくことにしました。指導教員と話をしてから，日本語の担当の先生方とお話をする機会がありました。門脇先生が主に調整をしてくださっていたのですが，授業計画や流れをきっちりとしてくださっており，一緒に授業を担当させていただくだけで勉強になると感じました。反転授業とICTの活用を同時に行っており，授業のシラバスも明確で，責任も感じました。アカウンタビリティにあたる部分はアメリカの高等教育では日本よりも非常に重要になるのだろうと感じました。週末にシラバスとスケジュールの確認をする必要があると分かったので，早速準備を始めていきます。
早速週明けから学生として，また日本語の先生としての生活が始まります。適度にがんばります。
UNR Day 3: Meeting My Supervisor and Japanese Teaching Prep
Today was another big day. I had a meeting with my supervisor at 10:30 AM. It was our first time meeting in person, and it turned out to be a really productive and positive experience. We talked about why I chose to pursue my graduate studies at UNR, the goals I’m aiming for, and some of the concerns I have regarding my research. One key point that came up is that as an international student, I’m required to take three courses each semester, but only one of those can be online. This is a bit tricky because many courses in my program are offered online, so I’ll need to coordinate with the school and OISS to make sure everything is sorted out.
Since I haven’t secured a Graduate Assistantship (GA) position yet, I’ll be teaching Japanese classes at UNR this semester. After my meeting with my supervisor, I had the chance to speak with the Japanese language instructors, including Professor Kadowaki, who’s been coordinating the courses. The lesson plans and course structure they’ve put together are impressively organized. I could already tell that co-teaching these classes is going to be a great learning experience for me. They’re implementing both flipped classroom methods and ICT tools, and the syllabus is clear and well-structured. I’m definitely feeling the responsibility that comes with this role. Accountability seems to play a much bigger role in higher education here in the U.S. compared to Japan.
I realized that I’ll need to review the syllabus and schedule over the weekend, so I’m starting my prep work right away.
Come next week, I’ll be diving into life as both a student and a Japanese language instructor. I’ll be giving it my best shot, but making sure to pace myself, too.
